Great Athlete Visit 2026

Alhamdulillah, our pupils recently enjoyed an exciting and inspiring visit from Antony Cotterill, a GB Wheelchair Tennis Player, as part of the Great Athletes programme. The event encouraged our children to embrace healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and the values of determination and perseverance.

Children from Reception through to Year 6 took part in a fun and energetic sponsored fitness circuit, completing a variety of exercises including Spotty Dogs, Plank Shoulder Taps, Squat Jumps, and Star Jumps. Throughout the event, pupils demonstrated enthusiasm, resilience, and excellent teamwork, encouraging one another to strive for their very best.

Following the fitness activities, Antony shared his remarkable sporting journey, speaking about the challenges he has overcome and the dedication required to compete at an elite level. His story was both inspiring and thought-provoking, reminding our pupils that success is often achieved through patience, hard work, and a positive mindset. The children also enjoyed an engaging question-and-answer session, where they had the opportunity to learn more about wheelchair tennis and life as a professional athlete.

At Al-Furqaan, we aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who understand the importance of looking after both their physical and spiritual wellbeing. As Muslims, we recognise that good health is an amanah (trust) from Allah, and that perseverance, discipline, and striving for excellence are qualities encouraged within our faith. Antony’s visit provided a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to see these values reflected through sport and personal achievement.

We would like to thank Antony Cotterill and the Great Athletes team for delivering such a memorable experience, as well as all parents, family members, and friends who supported the event through sponsorship. The funds raised will contribute towards replacing and enhancing our Sports Day equipment, helping to provide further opportunities for our pupils to remain active and engaged in healthy physical activity.
